City Projects
There are numerous projects all over Canada that help prevent vandalism and build community through commissioning graffiti artists to collaborate with community members in order to create murals that create awareness and celebrate culture.
Toronto
The Reclamation project has created Canada's largest graffiti mural is located near Parkdale, in Toronto, ON. The 300-metre-long, 6-feet-tall wall has been a major target for vandalizing and has been covered up over and over again.
Local artists José-Gabriel and Bill Emerson were assigned to create a mural. They put together 65 artists from all over Canada and each artist was given creative licence to paint whatever they want as long as it was not offensive or distasteful. Property developer, Urbancorp, which built the walls has donated money for the supplies. This project has cost about $100, 000. This mural celebrates Canada's multiculturalism
StreetARTToronto or StART is a new program that aims to counteract vandalism through promoting street art and engaging local artist to revitalize communities. StART provides funding up to $20, 000 and assists youth at risk and young adults arrested for graffiti vandalism, vandalism or mischief. The program allows opportunity for at-risk youth and young adults to serve in a meaningful way through the beautification of communities and take responsibility for vandalism.

This video is about the Highway of Heroes mural, a tribute to Canada's fallen soldiers. This mural is part of Toronto's graffiti transformation project that involves teachers and city police. They hire marginalized youth who face barriers to employment.
Calgary
Sunalta Elementary school commissioned Dean Stanton to create a mural on the walls of the school in 1990 and can still be seen from miles away because of its vibrant colors and shapes.
The Sunalta Community Association has commission Dean Stanton to create a pavement mural that resonated the mural he created for Sunalta Elementary School. This mural can be seen in the intersection of 14th Avenue and 15 Avenue SW. He sketched out the design and let the kids and/or adults in the community paint it. There are two reasons for this pavement mural: to slow traffic down & promote safety on roads and unify the neighborhood.
