Bio
My name is Diane Villanueva and I am a Visual Studies major in the Elementary stream. I have always been interested in graffiti but have never pursued it because using spray paint as a medium seems very difficult to work with. Artists often portray a message through their artwork and there is just something about your work being displayed on a giant wall in a public space that gives you the satisfaction of being heard.
Introduction
"Reign of Rebellion" oil on board.
This piece I painted for one of my art classes where we had to incorporate something modern with a renaissance painting we had to imitate. This is a portrait of King Henry VIII's son, Prince Edward Tudor or King Edward VI. As I contemplated on what kind of modern thing I should add to this painting, I did a little research and found that King Edward's reign had caused rebellion. As soon as I read the word rebellion, one thing popped into mind: graffiti.
I chose to research building community through graffiti art because graffiti has progressed from "tagging" with sharpies and paint markers to an art movement that helps prevent vandalism and even beautifies a public space through the collaboration of community members. Walls are being donated and graffiti artists are being commissioned to collaborate with the community to create murals.
This website is dedicated to everyone who is interested in learning about how graffiti can be used as a vehicle for learning, building relationships and awareness.
